Top 5 questions on moving to Perth

Moving to Perth

Things to consider for your move to Perth

Returned expat Carolyn Beasley has moved to Perth three times. She shares some of the top things to consider when moving to Perth.

Perth is one of the world’s most liveable cities, and with our vibrant communities, clean air, and beach sunsets, you’re going to love it here. But an international move is always stressful, and whether you’re relocating to Perth as an expat or a West Aussie returning, here are some important factors to consider.

1.      Which area should I live in?

There are plenty of friendly, safe suburbs to choose from, and budget is a major factor. The leafy western suburbs such as Dalkeith and Cottesloe are some of the most expensive, while south of the river, Applecross and South Perth are very popular. Suburbs east of the city and in the far north or south are often cheaper.

Factor in your work or other commitments. The greater Perth region sprawls over 100 kilometres, north to south. Be sure to research public transport options or the duration of your peak-hour drive. Lastly, consider your lifestyle, and whether to prioritise beaches, shopping, nightlife or the city. It may help to talk to a local.

2.      Should I rent or buy a house?

Most expats coming to Perth will choose to rent, taking the option to assess whether they like an area before considering a purchase. Keep in mind that rentals are currently scarce. In May 2021, the vacancy rate for Perth was only one percent. The process is competitive and professional assistance is recommended. It can be tempting to spend a few months in a furnished short-term rental, but certain administrative tasks, such as enrolling your child in schools, can be trickier without a fixed address.

3.      What school should I choose?

Schools in Perth are either public or private. Australian residents or those holding temporary resident visas can attend a public school almost for free, while dependents of visa classes 457 and 482 will pay $4000 per family per year. Students must live within the ‘catchment,’ the designated local area and all public schools are co-educational. For private schools, fees range from several thousand to around $30,000 per year.

Academically speaking, the top-performing school is Perth Modern School, which is a selective-entry public school. Other top-performing public schools include Shenton College and Rossmoyne Senior High.

Top academic private schools include St Hilda’s Anglican College (for girls), Christ Church Grammar School (for boys), and John XXIII College (co-educational). There are public and private schools that specialise in music, sports, languages, and vocational courses. Talk to AussieOS about a detailed report on Perth’s schools.

 4.      Should I relocate everything?

The costs of relocating your furniture can sometimes outweigh the convenience, and with Covid-19, costs have increased. Unless you’re emotionally attached, base your decision on quotes for moving versus storage versus buying something new. Only bring electrical and white goods if they are compatible with Western Australian power, 240 volts.

And how about your beloved pet? Brace yourself for a bill well into the thousands. Your fur baby will undergo vaccinations and tests at set times before departure and then spend at least 10 days in the government’s quarantine facility in Melbourne. A pet relocation agent can help navigate the paperwork and get your pet smoothly brought to Perth. If your pet is old or would be traumatised by the move, consider boarding your pet with family or friends while you’re gone.

  5.      What are the tax implications?

Whether to keep your money in an international bank account or transfer it to an Australian account is a complicated issue, depending on your personal circumstances, your residency status, and what you hope to do with the money. Seek professional advice from a financial planner or accountant with international taxation experience. Talk to us for a recommendation
